Sequels can add to or detract from a franchise. Cars 3 is a surprisingly warm and fun entry into a series that until now we watched out of obligation but not out of excitement. After the train wreck (pun intended?) of Cars 2, the amount of dread we had going in almost guaranteed hatred. But this movie pulled back on Mater and sped ahead with heart. The third in a series is not often the best, but in the Cars series, when you center a likeable character in Cruz Ramirez, highlight the fact that your “main character” is kind of an a**hole, and pull back the use of the comic relief to just comic relief, you can make a movie with a lot of heart that makes an audience enjoy rather than endure.
